The Gooderham Community Action group (GCAG) consists of people who are willing to work for and with the Community towards a better future. The Group’s goal is to plan, encourage and/or carry out programs, activities and events of interest and benefit to the residents of Gooderham and area. The Group may seek the assistance of other groups or organizations within or outside of the Gooderham area in order to accomplish its goals. The Group, where appropriate, may assist other groups or organizations in the community with their programs, activities or events, if requested.
We strive to preserve the past while enhancing the future. We work for and with the community towards a better future and to make our town a better and safer place to live.
At present the group consists of eleven members: Marilyn Wooder (Secretary Treasurer), Denise Winder (Chairperson), Bonnie Ryall (Secretary), Karen Polhamus (Newsletter/Website), Brian Mould, Katie Thompson, Bill Grylls, Marja Tuomi, Liz and Nick Case and volunteer member Myria Stoughton. We are always looking for new members. If you would like to join us or just want to come and see what we are all about. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month.
Some of our most recent accomplishments are:
The Gooderham Connection Newsletter which is provided free to all Gooderham residents. We also profile and honour a special child who has done a good deed, accomplished a special feat or is just a real neat kid. This newsletter is also emailed to residents who request it. Please contact Karen Polhamus at firstname.lastname@example.org to subscribe or if you would like to advertise.
We have completed a walking trail around the Gooderham Community Park. We were able to get a grant from Ken Hoeverman and the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders, and a donation from the Haliburton ATV Association, without whom it may never have been finished. Many thanks for all those who helped us reach our goal. Special thanks to Joe Graham (Get-er-done) for volunteering his time and machinery, Trails & Tours and the many other volunteers who helped out . A community who works together is a healthy community.
We provided a Trophy and Heritage Case at the Community Centre where trophies and Historical Artifacts of Gooderham are proudly displayed.
We applied for a grant from Hydro One, and working together with the LCBO who raised the funds to build the skating rink through their bottle drive, we were able to see the dream of a Community Ice Rink come true. Thanks to Neil Madill for donating his time to put the lights in so that the rink could be used in the evenings and to the volunteer firefighters who work so hard to keep it going during the winter.
This past summer we purchased and placed two benches and a picnic table in the park.
We also provided six chairs with arms to make our Community centre more accessible for those with disabilities.
Each year at Christmas time we do a Christmas Blessing where we help families within our community enjoy a better Christmas.
We also honour someone within our community with a “Community Spirit Award” each year at our Community Christmas Dinner. It you know of someone you would like to nominate for the “Community Spirit Award” please let us know.
We have also assisted and financially helped groups and events within our community like: Kids parties, Preschool play day, family Day, Fire & Rescue Auxiliary, Tree lighting Ceremony, Dedication of the Robert McCausland Memorial Community Centre.
Canada Day Celebration on July 1st: A great Day to celebrate Canada’s Birthday with family and friends, complete with games and activities for the kids, refreshments and top it off with a magnificent Fire Works display at dusk.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE A PART OF THIS DYNAMIC GROUP, PLEASE CALL Denise at 705 447-2953. We are always looking for new members or volunteers.
